communication with your neighbours is also important; form an independent disaster-prevention organization, building up mutual trust so that you will be able to help each other if the need arises.
(3) Fire prevention.
In an earthquake, most fires are started when articles drop onto a fire or when a piece of equipment using fire falls over.
For this reason, it is important to keep your home safe from fire and to remove anything which might cause fire.
Kerosene heaters
Use only kerosene heaters fitted with an automatic earthquake sensor and keep the area around it clear. Do not put flammable articles near the heater.
Dealing with combustible substances.
Make sure you do not place a container of combustible substance such as kerosene or benzene anywhere where there is a danger of it falling over or falling clown.
Gas.(Mains gas and propane gas)
Check that the gas pipe or rubber hose fittings are not loose, and be sure to turn the gas off at the mains when not in use.
Propane gas cylinders should be placed on a flat surface where nothing is likely to fall on top of them, secured by chains to prevent them falling over.
Fire-fighting tools.
